Decimus Junius Brutus seems to fit the character of the Shakespearean Brutus more than his cousin Marcus Junius Brutus. Decimus remained loyal to Caesar during the Civil War against the Pompeians, whereas 'Brutus' sided with the Optimates.

Marcus Junius Brutus (The Elder) had popular support and supported a group called the populares, rebuilt and in opposition to the more traditional optimates.
