From what I saw, it is used to transfer saves from the ss_bup.bin file, which is a copy of the Saturn's internal memory, to the ss_mems.bin, which is the 8MB cartridge emulated by Saroo, creating a slot in the ss_save that simulates the Saturn's internal memory.

The tilt release, to me, seems something very interesting that would improve print quality besides speed due to extra care and stability.
