Jul 22, 2020 · One of the playoff series that were most controversial at the time, and that has become almost universally accepted as rigged, or at least very poorly officiated, is the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and the Kings.

The west tends to be the deeper conference in terms of okay to good teams. Both conferences have about the same number of bad teams and great teams. This creates a situation where bad teams in the east are making the 7th or 8th seed & getting playoff draft slots when better Western teams are getting lottery picks.

That said, it's not like there were a ton of different Western teams in the Finals. From 1999-2010, outside of the 2006 Dallas Mavericks it was the Lakers/Spurs every year. Was the conference's Finals record propped up by those teams, or would other teams have done so?
