Critics are condemning his decision, which came after Hayden's appearance earlier this week before a Congressional committee, where she faced questions about a costly library modernization project.

"It is just the latest in his ongoing attempt to whitewash our history and replace dedicated public servants with loyal sycophants."

Hayden was notified in an email late Thursday from the White House’s Presidential Personnel Office that she was being fired effective immediately.
