Mikal Mahdi was the second man in South Carolina to be executed by a three-person firing squad on April 11, after admitting to killing an off-duty police officer in 2004.

Mikal Mahdi was killed last month by prison officials, but autopsy results indicated that executioners did not follow protocol and Mahdi endured prolonged pain.

Mikal Mahdi was sentenced to death for his killing spree in Windston-Salem, North Carolina, in July 2004, where he took the life of a 29-year-old convenience store clerk, Christopher Jason Boggs, and gunned down 56-year-old off-duty police officer, James Myers, two days later in South Carolina.
