We've been through a hurricane, tropical weather scares and the mind-numbing drone of Southeast Texas summer heat—and it's all about to pay off this week. Houston is on the verge of a fall breakthrough courtesy of a backdoor cold front expected to arrive in the region beginning overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

Monday's high is expected to reach a temperature of 97 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking the previous record set nearly 10 years ago. Tuesday's temperature is also expected to break a record, marking some of the hottest days Houston has ever experienced this far into October.

Temperatures in Southeast Texas will soar into the mid-90s Tuesday, likely breaking a daily record before a cold front changes the weather pattern.

Keep the sweater handy. In direct sunlight, the 70s will feel nice, but you may get cool with the ongoing north wind.

The city set a new record high for the day of 99 degrees. The previous record for October 14 was 92 degrees. Forecasters were expecting hot temperatures on Monday, but the high being just one degree shy of the century mark was stunning to local meteorologists.
