A national emergency was declared and events for Israel's Independence Day on Thursday were cancelled as the fires spread near Jerusalem.

Bushfires that erupted near Jerusalem were largely brought under control on Thursday, authorities said, with major roads reopened and firefighting teams still tackling lingering hotspots.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amplified claims that the fires were due to arson, an accusation the fire department downplayed.
