DETROIT -- Longtime Detroit Tigers outfielder and 1984 World Series hero Chet Lemon has died at the age of 70. Lemon’s wife Gigi told the Detroit Free Press that he died in his sleep Thursday morning.

Lemon played the first seven years of his career on the White Sox and was a back-to-back All-Star in 1978 and 1979. He played for the Tigers for the final nine years of his career and was an All-Star during that World Series title season in 1984.

After firing manager Derek Shelton, the Pittsburgh Pirates have named former Detroit Tigers cult hero Don Kelly as their interim manager.

Bench coach and former Tiger Don Kelly will take over for Derek Shelton, who is the first manager fired across Major League Baseball this season.
