Jota broke down in tears after scoring on his Celtic return in the Hoops' 3-1 away win against Motherwell. It was only 18 months ago that Jota left Celtic in a £25 million move to join Al-Ittihad. He spent a year there and if rumours are accurate then he earned multiple times more than he would have in Glasgow.

“It’s a huge moment for Jota,” manager Brendan Rodgers told BBC Scotland, reflecting on his new recruit’s return. “That’s the very reason he’s come back. It’s important for creative players to feel wanted and appreciated. The environment has to be right for them. Celtic is the perfect environment for him. “He’s going to be a big asset for us.”

Jota says his goal-scoring Celtic return was "just like old times" and he sensed he would find the back of the net once he got off the bench. The Portuguese winger signed for Celtic for the second time in January having been sold to Al-Ittihad for a reported £25m in 2023, and subsequently moved to French club Rennes.

Jota returns for a reported fee of £9m and has signed a four-and-a-half year deal with the Scottish champions. During his first spell at the club, the 25-year-old won every domestic honour available to him and scored 28 goals and provided 26 assists. He is being tipped to wear the number 23 jersey on his return.
