Beyoncé kicked off her "Cowboy Carter" tour in Los Angeles, and it is a bold blend of country music, political symbolism and cultural reclamation.

At one point during Beyoncé's 36-song, western-themed Cowboy Carter tour opener, the words "Never ask permission for something that already belongs to you" were illuminated in red across the massive screen.

Beyoncé soared across SoFi Stadium in a giant neon horseshoe, and then again in a red convertible Cadillac. She mounted and rode a gleaming, mechanical golden bull — all the while belting tunes from Cowboy Carter and her decades-spanning discography.
