USDA withdraws proposed rule limiting Salmonella in raw poultry food
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is withdrawing a proposed rule, developed during the Biden administration, that would limit the amount of Salmonella in raw poultry products. In a statement, USDA said the rule would have imposed “significant financial and operational burdens on American businesses and consumers."
Yet a frozen pepperoni pizza, because it contains meat, will go through three separate USDA inspections: At the slaughterhouse, at the pepperoni-making facility, and at the pizza factory.
Food safety inspections would be left to state and local authorities under the plan being developed by the FDA.
