Because of wildfires in Los Angeles, Academy Award nominations will be delayed by two days and announced on Sunday, Jan. 19

The Oscars are not canceled and there are no plans to move the March 2 event despite the devastation of the California wildfires, according to senior members of the Academy, who shut down a viral tabloid story about the show’s supposed cancelation from The Sun.

The U.K. tabloid The Sun posted a story to its website on Tuesday evening suggesting that the Academy is consulting a committee of A-listers about whether to proceed with the ceremony on March 2.

It started with a tabloid report in U.K. newspaper The Sun titled “OSCARS THREAT Oscars 2025 on verge of being cancelled as bosses secretly plot major changes to ceremony after LA wildfires.” The article went on to claim that “Official Academy Award committees,

We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang told Variety in a joint statement in January 2025.
