SAN JOSE HOMELESS residents are at risk of being cited or arrested if they’re caught sleeping or sitting on the sidewalk by early morning. The City Council voted unanimously at its March 11 meeting to extend sidewalk sleeping and sitting restrictions by two hours early in the morning starting at 8 a.

City officials have extended a ban on lying or sitting on sidewalks in a portion of downtown in hopes of addressing safety and accessibility concerns.

Seven candidates are running in a special election to represent the heart of San Jose, the businesses and neighborhoods that make up downtown, with the District 3 seat open after Omar Torres' arrest.
