The Democratic controlled cities of Salt Lake City and Boise adopted new city flags this week showing support for LGBTQ+ people in defiance of their states’ Republican-controlled Legislatures, which have banned traditional rainbow pride flags at schools and government buildings.

Boise and Salt Lake City have both adopted the Pride flag – or a slight variation of it – as official symbols as of Tuesday night, effectively circumventing state law.

Salt Lake City has adopted three new flags in an attempt to skirt around the state’s ban on flying the LGBTQ+ flag and others at public state buildings. On Tuesday, the Council adopted the three new flags in a formal meeting.
