The Trump administration forced a permitted offshore wind project to halt construction. The Trump administration dealt a major blow to the fledgling US offshore wind industry yesterday by ordering a major wind project off the coast of New York to stop construction.

The project, called Empire Wind 1, which is located about 14 miles from Jones Beach State Park, is slated to begin commercial operation in 2027, and would be the first offshore wind initiative to connect to New York City’s grid.

The Norwegian company Equinor plans to erect 54 1,000-foot wind turbines, starting around 15 miles from the shore.
