Mayor John Whitmire announced a 36.5 percent raise for police officers over the next five years, in a new agreement reached with the Houston Police Officers Union. Under the proposed contract, Houston police officers would see incremental raises over the next five years.

Houston police officers are getting a total of 36.5% in salary increases over five years, after months of negotiations between the city of Houston and the Houston Police Officers' Union, according to a May 2 news conference.

The five-year contract for the Houston Police Department would cost the city about $832 million over the span of the deal. It was struck as the city faces a budget deficit projected to exceed $200 million.
