A small, home-built kit airplane crashed in Simi Valley, California, on Saturday afternoon, damaging two homes and and catching fire, officials said.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office identified the two men as 69-year-old Paul Berkovitz and his 36-year-old son, Matthew Berkovitz. Paul's dog, Brody, was also identified. The Berkovitz family released a statement about the crash.

A kit-built plane crashed in Simi Valley, killing two passengers and a dog. It was the second crash of that model aircraft in the last five months.
