A successor to Pope Francis had been elected. But there will be a short wait before his identity becomes clear.

The cardinals are shut off from the world for the secretive voting that will result in new leadership for the world's 1.4 billion Roman Catholics.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentine cardinal Angel Rossi, one of the 133 now gathered at the Vatican to elect a new pope, told Reuters before the conclave that he hoped the next leader of the global Catholic Church - whoever he is - will maintain intact the vision of Pope Francis, a fellow Jesuit and his former teacher.

Francis’ successor will be selected by cardinals at the conclave that began on May 7. Cardinals, known as the “princes of the church,” rank just below the pope in the Roman Catholic Church; together, they are known as the College of Cardinals. When a pope dies, the college chooses a successor.
