The island’s latest security blueprint sends message that Taipei depends on a stable partnership at time of uncertainty about the U.S. president’s stance.

Beijing said the drills were in response to recent statements and actions by the U.S. and others regarding the self-governing island it claims sovereignty over.

If the Lai administration "dares to provoke and play with fire, it will only bring about its own destruction," a spokesperson for the office said in a statement. China views democratically governed Taiwan as its territory, a claim rejected by the government in Taipei.
