HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) — Storm preparations are underway in Western North Carolina. Crews there are not only preparing for the chance of snow and ice on the roadways, but are still cleaning up from Hurricane Helene. At the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Henderson County Yard, crews have been preparing for a winter storm.

On Thursday at 2:13 p.m. the NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC issued a winter storm warning valid from Friday 7 a.m. until Saturday 7 a.m. The warning is for Northern Jackson, Southern Jackson, Caldwell Mountains,

The NWS Blacksburg VA issued an updated winter storm warning at 3:46 a.m. on Monday. The warning is for Ashe, Alleghany and Watauga counties.

Governor Kemp declared a statewide emergency for Georgia through Tuesday, with winter weather expected to impact the state beginning today. South Carolina Governor McMaster issued an executive order for transportation waivers ahead of winter weather for Friday as well.

Snow and ice is expected in north Georgia and metro Atlanta by Friday morning with a quick changeover to rain and freezing rain for much of the day. Many schools and government offices have already closed ahead of the storm.

Much of north Georgia is under a winter storm warning from Friday morning until Saturday. The far northern part of the state can expect between two and four inches of accumulation, according to the National Weather Service.

Before the weather system’s arrival, crews will apply a brine solution to interstates, state routes, bridges and overpasses in anticipation of freezing rain, sleet, ice, and snow.
