Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul's lawsuit claims President Donald Trump's executive order is unconstitutional.

In Illinois in 2022, approximately 9,000 U.S. citizen children were born to mothers who lack legal status, and just over 5,000 U.S. citizen children were born to two parents who lacked legal status.

Attorney General Kwame Raoul is one of almost two dozen attorneys general to file suit against President Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship.

Platkin was among the officials from 18 states, San Francisco and Washington, DC, who filed the case in federal court in Boston. Washington State Attorney General Nicholas Brown led a coalition of four other states, including Illinois, that filed a similar lawsuit in the Seattle federal court.

The Trump administration is "twisting itself in knots" in trying to limit birthright citizenship and focus on deportations, argues New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin.

"The language in the 14th Amendment is clear and unambiguous. If you are born in this country, you are a citizen of this country," Raoul said of President Trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship.
