People who want to stop paying for a subscription or membership will soon be able to do so with just a call or a click instead of getting caught in a discouraging maze, according to federal rules unveiled Wednesday.

Under the so-called "click-to-cancel" rule, if customers decide to enroll in a subscription online or through an app in one step -- they should be able to cancel that way, too.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission adopted a final rule on Wednesday requiring businesses to make it as easy to cancel subscriptions and memberships as it is to sign up, in the agency’s last major rulemaking before the Nov.
